Understanding a member's membership payment status
This article outlines how payment status and memberships work, including how to check a member's membership payment status.
- How membership payment status works
- How to check a member's membership or payment status
- Common questions
Must-knows:
- Memberships are active immediately after registering. A payment that takes longer to settle, for example, an async payment method like Direct Debit, affects only payment status.
How membership payment status works
- A membership is immediately active on successful registration regardless of the payment status.
- The payment status starts as Awaiting payment and updates to Paid once the payment succeeds. If payment fails, the status will update to Pending payment, and the member will receive a notification to pay via an alternative payment method.
- For Rolling memberships or upgrades, the payment status would display as Partially paid until the payment has been processed successfully.
- If a member has been manually added, their payment status would display as a dash (-). Currently, doesn't support requesting payment for manually added Members; therefore, payment will need to be taken via an alternative method.
How to check a member's membership payment status
- Go to Rankings & memberships in the top navigation, and select the membership series from the list

- Go to the members tab. The payment status will be under the Payment status column.

- If your organisation uses rolling memberships or one-off memberships, an athlete's membership may have a red EXPIRED or RESTRICTED tag next to their name. This is unrelated to the payment status of the membership. In the case of a rolling membership, the tag means the membership hasn't been renewed, and for the one-off, it means it's been used.
Common questions
A member's membership says Awaiting payment; is something wrong?
No, this is expected when the athlete pays via an async method like Direct Debit or PayTo. The membership is still valid; however, payment is still settling.
Does this apply the same way to events?
For events using Registered or Confirmed as the default entry status, payment status is tracked separately and can sit at Awaiting payment until the payment clears. For Waitlisted events, payment isn't taken until a director confirms them; in this case, an entry remains waitlisted until payment is successful. See the following articles for more details: Using waitlisted event registration, Understanding event entry payment status.
A member's membership says Unpaid or has a dash (-) in the payment status column; is something wrong?
No, this is expected when a member has been manually added to the membership series. The membership is still valid. However, unlike event entries, Liveheats currently doesn't have the functionality to request payment for manually added members; therefore, payment is required to be taken off-platform via an alternative method.
What happens if payment never succeeds?
The membership itself is not automatically revoked; a Director needs to review and decide whether to follow up or remove the entry/member.
